Turkish pop star Tarkan is in discussions over taking part in a series of international concerts planned as part of a 10-year global campaign for peace.

World Peace One, a non-profit global peace advocacy group whose mission is to bring peace to the world, is planning the concerts as a part of its 10-year campaign that will also include education and government initiatives, reported the music industry publication Billboard on its Web site last week.
The group has targeted some of the top acts in the world for the international concert series, which is slated to begin May 17. Among well-known acts the organization is in talks with are U2, Madonna, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Lionel Richie, Celine Dion and Justin Timberlake, World Peace One founder Doug Ivanovich told Billboard. Artists from Brazil, China and Africa are also being considered. "Our mission is ending all war at the end of our 10-year period," Ivanovich was quoted as saying by Billboard. "Our intent is to foster and generate the largest people's movement, grass roots as well as institutional, in the history of the world."

The campaign will begin with a series of concerts on May 17 in Beijing, İstanbul, London, Johannesburg and Miami, as well as the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Colombia, India and possibly other locations. World Peace One is currently nailing down the venues and offering artists choices of where they can perform. "We are going to have at least seven major international venues where we can host anywhere from 65,000 people up to several hundred thousand," Ivanovich said.

Tarkan, who released his latest album, "Metamorfoz" (Metamorphosis), towards the end of 2007, has been known for his dynamic live onstage performances since the very beginning of his career in the early 1990s. The singer-songwriter -- whose hits include "Kiss Kiss," which hit charts in more than a dozen countries in the late 1990s -- has lately been actively involved in charitable projects, signing a partnership contract earlier this year with the Doğa (Nature) Foundation, a Turkish NGO for nature conservation.
